I splurged awhile ago and bought a patterned background. It was purchased on a whim. I’ve always been a black, grey or white background kind of photographer, so this was a risk. When it came, I did some quick mini sessions to try it out.
The verdict? Meh. I still prefer the solid backgrounds because I think this one takes away from the cute faces in front of it. Having said that, I’m going to keep it. I think it might be nice for some headshots. And I’d still like to practice some more, once my studio is back in operation.

While I have you here, there’s some stuff in the works for the next little while.

In May, I will be available for outdoor shoots. I have 2 spots available in Calgary, and 2 in Sylvan Lake. Email right away to reserve your session.

Sometimes I shoot a session where I cannot wait to edit the images. This was one of those sessions. You have seen this family on my blog a lot…they live 2 doors down from me, and are always up for a shoot. So, when I posted on my Facebook Page last week that I wanted to do a canola field shoot…they were all over it.

Not ten minutes after I got home, I already had them uploaded and was editing them. I had them all done and the gallery up that night! (To my future clients – although I am always fast…I am seldom THAT fast!)

The little girl hasn’t always been a ‘fan’ of getting her picture taken. In the past, it has always been a little bit of a struggle to get her to look happy. This night was NOT like that. All of a sudden she’s a little poser! She was smiling and really ‘workin it’. Her brother has always been a great little model, and didn’t disappoint this time either. I was super excited.

Facing My Fear and Doing it Anyway {Calgary Portrait Party Photographer}

Back in 2006 – 2009, I was part of another Photography company in Calgary and we specialized in Home Portrait Parties. I made a lot of friends through that business, from past Hostesses and guests. Many are Facebook friends of mine, and many have become loyal customers to ‘Shannon Hilton Photography’ as well.

One past hostess kept asking me to come and shoot a party, and I just wasn’t ready on my own. For one reason or another (mostly the fact that I had a newborn), I kept saying no.  But, last fall she emailed me and said she wouldn’t take no for an answer…so what could I do?

I was super nervous. It was the first time I had taken my lighting & studio equipment out of the studio. Part of the reason I have a studio, is so I don’t have to set the stuff up all the time. I really don’t like the fear of the unknown. I had purchased &/or rented back-up everything for the party, even picking up my new camera the day before.

So, the big day came. The hostess had her family, and 7 other families scheduled for mini-shoots.

And, I woke up sick.

But, the show must go on, and it did! It went off without a hitch.

A BIG Thank-you to Donna, for making me face my fear & do it anyway!

Violet. STILL Calgary’s Cutest Kid {Calgary Cute Kid Photographer}

Pretty Miss Violet and her awesome parents came to visit me again last November (yes, November…I’m a little behind). Violet was the winner in a Calgary Radio station’s Cutest Kid Competition back in 2009. I photographed her last year (see that post here), where she made friends with my daughters, and insisted they be around for this years shoot too. So, we obliged.
