Elf on the Shelf fun at our house!

December 27th, 2011

Now that Christmas is over, and I’ve had 3 nights without Henry the elf, I can look back with fond memories. If you don’t know the deal; the Elf was sent to us from Santa, to keep an eye on the kids. Every night he flies home to the North Pole to report back to [...]

Now that Christmas is over, and I’ve had 3 nights without Henry the elf, I can look back with fond memories.
If you don’t know the deal; the Elf was sent to us from Santa, to keep an eye on the kids. Every night he flies home to the North Pole to report back to Santa, and when he comes back, he’s in a different spot. Ours was very mischievous; toilet papering our front room one night, taking a hmmer to the gingerbread house, even putting plastic wrap on the toilet. You can see more on the Elf on the Shelf site.

The kids LOVED it. It definitely added a fun new tradition to our Christmas. The only problem is that we started on November 8th. WAY too early. Next year we will start on December 1st like normal people.

Here are the pics!

Christmas Deadlines {Calgary Christmas Photographer}

November 28th, 2011

So, obviously everyone has looked at their calendars today and realized that November turns into December this Thursday. And with that, the thought of Christmas, and family portraits! I’ve had more inquiries today than the entire fall combined. So, here’s the deal… The deadline to order prints is December 14th. The deadline to order digital [...]

The deadline to order prints is December 14th.
The deadline to order digital files is December 20th.

So…the deadline for sessions is December 11th.

I’ve had a couple requests to do outdoor/snow pics. If we actually get some snow in the next couple weeks, and it’s not too cold, I might set up some mini-sessions somewhere for this. Watch my Facebook Page for details on that. (www.facebook.com/ShannonHiltonPhoto)

Christmas 2011 Mini Sessions {Calgary Family Photographer}

November 7th, 2011

It’s that time again! Time for Christmas Mini Sessions. Often, a full hour of shooting just isn’t needed. Especially in winter, and in the studio. So, at different times of the year, I offer mini sessions, which are 20-25 minutes instead of an hour; with different packages, prices and specials. This is what I’m doing [...]

This is what I’m doing this time:

When: November 19th & 20th – Sessions run continuously from 10am until 5pm. You pick what 1/2 time slot works best for you.
Where: My studio – in Chaparral (we’ve put off the basement reno until the New Year!)
How Much? The session is only $25. About 4-5 days later, your images will be up on a password protected gallery, and you can just order what you want. No packages, nothing you don’t need. My Print/Digital File prices can be seen here

The whole idea is to get at least one perfect photo for you to use in your Christmas Cards. (I also do cards, FYI).

Attn: Sylvan Lake/Red Deer people: I am available to come up and do Minis on November 27th if I have enough interest. Email me if you want to be put on a list.

It was so nice getting to spend time with this family, twice! The worst thing about posting images in February that were taken in December, is the Christmas stuff is a dead giveaway at how behind I am! I am catching up though…yay!

Facing My Fear and Doing it Anyway {Calgary Portrait Party Photographer}

January 28th, 2011

Back in 2006 – 2009, I was part of another Photography company in Calgary and we specialized in Home Portrait Parties. I made a lot of friends through that business, from past Hostesses and guests. Many are Facebook friends of mine, and many have become loyal customers to ‘Shannon Hilton Photography’ as well. One past [...]

One past hostess kept asking me to come and shoot a party, and I just wasn’t ready on my own. For one reason or another (mostly the fact that I had a newborn), I kept saying no.  But, last fall she emailed me and said she wouldn’t take no for an answer…so what could I do?

I was super nervous. It was the first time I had taken my lighting & studio equipment out of the studio. Part of the reason I have a studio, is so I don’t have to set the stuff up all the time. I really don’t like the fear of the unknown. I had purchased &/or rented back-up everything for the party, even picking up my new camera the day before.

So, the big day came. The hostess had her family, and 7 other families scheduled for mini-shoots.

And, I woke up sick.

But, the show must go on, and it did! It went off without a hitch.

A BIG Thank-you to Donna, for making me face my fear & do it anyway!

Here are some of my favourite images from the day. And, if anyone else is interested in hosting a Portrait Party, just send me an email and I’ll send you the deets (ps. the hostess gets free stuff!).

Giving is Awesome 2010 {Calgary & Sylvan Lake Photographer}

giving is awesome

Last year, I took part of a National Portraiture giveaway called ‘Giving is Awesome’. While the original website that organized the program is now gone, I’d like to still do it. The winner from last year, Tracy, was a huge inspiration to me to keep ‘Paying it Forward’, so I do, in every way I can, and this is one of the biggest things I can give.

So here it goes:

You know someone. You know someone who’s experienced a tragedy, is struggling to stay afloat, is raising kids while holding down more than one job, or is volunteering selflessly despite extenuating personal circumstances. You know someone who can’t afford custom photography, but who would cherish it this holiday season. You know someone who deserves a year-round reminder of their family’s spirit, love, and beauty.

You know someone. I guarantee it.

I want to know who they are, and I want to give them the chance to experience complimentary custom photography — $2125 worth, to be exact. The winner will receive a private sitting and all their digital files – memories to keep for a lifetime. It’s in your power to give them the artwork they deserve this holiday season.

Oh, and the best part? The person who nominates the winner receives a $325 sitting/digital file package. What better reason to show some love could there possibly be, people?

The rules:

* You cannot nominate yourself, and the person nominated must sincerely be incapable of purchasing my services.

* The nominee must reside in Calgary or Sylvan Lake. Tell me who you know, what they’re experiencing, and why they deserve my artwork. Please include a way to contact both your nominee and yourself as well.

* You must e-mail me the full story : shannonhiltonphotography@gmail.com.

The winner will be announced on Christmas Eve — get nominating! I can’t wait to read all of your entries! Entry deadline is 8pm on December 23rd.

Open your heart to someone this holiday season — and thanks for giving me the opportunity to open mine.

With love,

Shannon

2010 BONUS – Tell your friends about the contest, and you could win a $100 Apple Gift Card! If I can DOUBLE the amount of people who “Like’ my Facebook page by the end of this contest, one random fan will receive the Gift Card. So if you haven’t already, go on and LIKE me, and then tell your friends! Share this post to Facebook, how about (click below)!

Technical Difficulties {Frustrated Calgary Photographer}

If you were trying to get on my website (or blog) earlier tonight…well, yesterday since it is now 12:20am…you may have had some issues. I’m not sure what happened, but a little tweaking got me all messed up, and I ended up having to delete and re-install my blog. And guess what? The last time I did a back up was in early November…and guess what else? Even though I had backed up the posts, it didn’t include the images. So this is now a photography blog without images, before November. I have re-posted all of the blog posts since November, and now I sleep.

I hope to re-post all the images from the past year-ish in my upcoming slow months! Stay tuned!

You also only have a few more weeks to book a sitting in 2011 for 2010 prices. The next update I do to my website will include a complete overhaul of my pricing structure.

And, now…my family…
